Saboor Kamal

Founder and Chairman of Gate Of Hope

Distinguished Afghan-American humanitarian and media professional with a Master’s degree in Social and Political Sciences from Saint Petersburg State University. He contributed extensively to international media coverage from key U.S. government institutions and the United Nations.

Saboor Kamal, son of Kamaluddin, was born on April 18, 1964, into an intellectual middle-class family in Shiberghan City, Jawzjan Province, Afghanistan. He began his education in 1970 at Yamin High School (also known as Ibn Yamin Jowzjani High School) and graduated in 1982 with high academic distinction. During 1980–1981, alongside his studies, he worked part-time as a typesetter at the Jawzjan State Printing House. After successfully passing the national university entrance examination (Kankor), he traveled to the former Soviet Union to pursue higher education and, in 1988, earned a Master’s degree in Social and Political Sciences from Leningrad State University (now Saint Petersburg State University).

Upon returning to Afghanistan in 1988, he completed twenty-three months of compulsory military service and was honorably discharged. In 1990, in response to needs identified by the Jawzjan Provincial Authority, he was appointed Head of Repatriation Affairs for Refugees, Martyrs, and Disabled Persons, serving until the collapse of the Najibullah government. Following the regime’s fall and due to prevailing security conditions, he was compelled to leave the country. Between 1993 and 1994, he operated a private business, including a bigasan shop, but subsequent threats forced him to relocate again. He lived and worked independently in Tajikistan, the Russian Federation, and Uzbekistan before resettling in the United States in December 2006 through the assistance of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Since then, he has resided in the Commonwealth of Virginia with his wife and four children.

In the United States, Mr. Kamal has been active in media and community engagement. For approximately eight years, he collaborated with Ariana News Television, contributing to news preparation and coverage from the White House, the United States Congress, the Departments of State and Defense, the Pentagon, and the annual sessions of the United Nations in New York, in addition to engagement with various embassies and institutions in Washington, D.C. He has also participated in numerous meetings and events, including American chambers of commerce gatherings, USAID-related meetings, and city council sessions across different states.

Driven by a strong commitment to humanitarian service and the well-being of his homeland, he formally established the Gate of Hope charitable foundation in 2021, with prior groundwork beginning in 2020 alongside several dedicated supporters. The foundation was registered in both Afghanistan and the United States and operates with active offices in both countries. Mr. Kamal was unanimously appointed as President General of the organization.

He is fluent in Dari (Persian and Tajiki), Pashto, Uzbek, Russian, and English. He maintains an independent, non-partisan stance while fostering respectful relations across communities. His personal interests include volleyball, football, boxing, and chess.
